WELCOME TO TRIPOLI SOUTH FLORIDA PREFECTURE #111

You are welcome to come watch or participate at our launches but there are a few things to keep in mind.  If the weather looks bad we will postpone a launch. If you don’t get an e-mail that it is a go or no-go CALL BEFORE drive out a couple hours to an empty field. My cell is 305-301-6728. program it in your cell phone now.

The field is a large agricultural tract located at approximately 222nd avenue and 384th street southwest. This is to the south and west of Florida City where the Turnpike exits to US1.

To get there, take the Florida Turnpike or US1 south to Florida City and turn west at Palm Drive a.k.a. SW 344th Street. Go straight to SW 217th Avenue and turn south (left).  Go about 2.5 miles and look for our group on the right. We are usually located west of the only phone pole on the right side. The field approximates the surface of Mars with coarse dust and rocks for a surface. Don’t fly a rocket you are afraid to scratch up.We occasionally have sprinkler trucks, steel re-bar and vegetation as hazards but almost no trees for a square mile.

The Landowner who is kind enough to let us use his field has asked us to observe a few rules.

  1. This is a working farm. Do not park or drive off of road surfaces.
  2. Do not drive or walk across rows – walk along them.
  3. Because of unmarked, open wells scattered throughout the field children under the age of 13 are prohibited from the field.

Rocket Flying is encouraged so bring out whatever you have A – O.   Flight fees are  $5.00 for high power rockets.

We have a single launcher which generally does us pretty well. If you have a launcher you like, bring it out along with any GSE you need. There may be chemical toilets  nearby or not depending on the season. If you like indoor facilities, you can head southwest to the Everglades  National Park Visitor center.

You will also need:

  • any ground support equipment your rocket specifically needs
  • Sunscreen -  like 150,000 spf if you can find it
  • A big hat to keep the sun off
  • sturdy shoes you can get dirty without getting upset
  • water, drinks and a cooler
  • some snacks
  • paper towels, hand cleaner, rags
  • a garbage bag to pack out your trash
  • folding chairs, table, tents, patio chairs, maybe a table or something to keep yourself comfortable
  • bug spray
  • camera, video camera, etc.
  • binoculars
  • a sense of humor
