Modern Masters Venetian
Plaster |
| Preparation |
The walls should be ready to be painted
as they would for other decorative effects. The surface should be free of
defects, sealed and have a low sheen. If there is a texture to the surface,
apply a thin skim coat over the surface before step 1. It is recommended to
tint your primer similar to the color you have selected in Venetian
Plaster. |
| You will also need : two 4" - 6" steel
putty knives, heavy nap or stucco roller, dry sandpaper 400, 600 grit sandpaper
|
When applying the Venetian
plaster, the first coat is the texture coat. The first coat may be rolled on,
but flatten down the roller stipple by dragging the putty knife lightly across
the surface in random directions. If you drag out any pills, pick them out and
fill the scrape by applying plaster to the wall using the flat of the
blade. |
 |
APPLY TEXTURE
COAT |
| The texture coat of Venetian Plaster is
applied using a very heavy nap or stucco roller in a manner that leaves hills
& valleys. This technique will produce peaks that should be knocked down by
smoothing lightly with a putty knife while the product is still wet. Let dry 24
hours |
Keep the can covered to prevent
crusting Keep your knife clean and smooth. Nicks and dirt or dried
plaster can create scratches Sand the
sharp corners of putty knife with 100 grit sandpaper to prevent lines. Bend the
blade a little to |
|
 |
APPLY SKIM
COAT |
| A skim coat of the same color is
applied using a putty knife. Hold the blade at a 60 degree angle and force the
skim coat into the valleys of texture and scrape off the excess. Apply the skim
coat like you would fill and patch a crack, continuing over the entire surface.
Let this coat dry for 1-2 hours. You may apply as many different layers and
colors of the skim coat as desired. |
| For the second layer use the flat side
of your spatula/putty knife to apply the product avoiding the edge of the
knife. After the plaster goes on to the wall drag the edge across the surface
to remove excess material. The second coat is to fill in the texture and smooth
the surface as much as possible. The smoother the surface you end up with after
knifing, the easier it is to polish. |
Be creative. Work the surface a lot.
Apply the plaster very thin, scraping
away the excess. Now is the time to fix
chunks and bits that stick out. Try to
avoid knife lines from edges and corners of the blade. |
|
 |
BURNISH /
POLISH |
| Once the skim coat is dry,
burnish/polish the Venetian plaster. To burnish the coating, sand the Venetian
Plaster in a circular motion with 400 grit dry sandpaper. Dust off with a soft
rag and sand with 600 grit dry sandpaper. Dust off again with a soft damp rag.
To get a very high sheen, rub vigorously with the flat side of a putty
knife. |
| After the second coat is dry, use the
flat edge of your spatula to begin the burnishing process. The surface will
begin to show color variations as it becomes smoother. For higher polishing,
use 400 grit sandpaper, dry. A power sander may be used but be careful to keep
the paper clean and changed often to avoid swirly marks. Wipe the excess dust
off the surface when finished |
Do not use the putty knife to polish
light colors, it will impart a streaking grayness to the finish. Dark color
streaking is rarely noticed. Always
sand in a circular motion, this helps to prevent lines. |

| Protecting the
Finish |
SATIN
TOPCOAT After being polished, the Venetian Plaster should be treated
with care, it is not scrubbable, but it is easily repaired. To provide extra
protection in bathrooms or high traffic areas, apply the Satin Topcoat. Other
protective top coats cannot be used to protect the venetian
plaster. The topcoat is applied with a putty knife (it cannot be rolled or
brushed) in a very thin layer. This application will darken the finish slightly
and will dry to a satin sheen. You can slightly polish the topcoat, once it is
dry, by rubbing it with the flat side of a clean putty knife. |
| Other
Decorative Options |
Translucent metallic
sheen To add a translucent metallic sheen over the Venetian Plaster,
add Modern Masters Metallic Paint to the Satin Top Coat in a ratio of 3 ounces
per quart of top coat. Mix well with a stir stick and apply with a putty knife
over the Venetian Plaster. Scrape off the excess and let this coat
dry |
